Beskrivelse

Between Denmark and Detroit explores the fascinating story of the Danish Ford Motor Company, which assembled the iconic Model T in Copenhagen from 1919 until 1966. This book dives into how Ford’s mass production methods were adapted and challenged in a Nordic setting.

A detailed history of Ford’s expansion to Denmark and the evolution of Fordism across the Atlantic.

In 1919, the Ford Motor Company, the world’s largest car manufacturer, chose Denmark as its gateway to continental Europe. Denmark’s strategic location and favorable customs policies made it an ideal choice. During the 1920s, Ford’s famous Model T was assembled in Copenhagen, with many vehicles exported to northeastern Europe.

The manufacturing techniques used in the Danish plant mirrored those in Ford’s American factories. Notably, the Copenhagen facility was designed by Albert Kahn, the same architect behind Ford’s renowned Highland Park factory in Detroit, Michigan.

The Danish Ford Motor Company managed to keep production going through tough times, including the 1930s recession, the German occupation during World War II, and the Cold War era. However, the Copenhagen factory eventually closed in 1966 as Ford shifted its focus to larger European operations.

Henry Ford’s innovative mass production principles were more than just technological advancements. They represented his vision of a prosperous consumer society. Yet, as Fordism crossed the Atlantic, the strict discipline and fast-paced work culture of Detroit faced challenges from local customs, changing markets, and a stronger labor movement in Denmark compared to the U.S.

Between Denmark and Detroit not only offers an in-depth account of the Danish Ford Motor Company but also sheds light on how Fordism was reshaped by its relocation to Europe.
