Beskrivelse

Explore the complex political tensions between Europe's dominant powers and the lesser-known courts that navigated their influence. This book delves into how these courts expressed loyalty and crafted their own identities amid rivalries.

Examining the cultural and political strategies of European courts beyond the Habsburg and Valois/Bourbon spheres in Early Modern Europe.

During Early Modern Continental Europe, the political stage was largely shaped by two rival superpowers: the Habsburgs of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire on one side, and the French Kingdom under the Valois and Bourbon monarchs on the other. Their ongoing battles for dominance, seniority, and precedence not only set them apart but also deeply influenced court life, including etiquette, diplomatic rituals, and even the design of court architecture.

Courts aligned with these powerful factions often showcased their allegiance through distinct codes, spatial layouts, and decorative choices. But what about the independent European courts that existed outside the direct influence of these superpowers? How did they respond to the overwhelming cultural forces around them-as neutral neighbors, allies, or even adversaries? These courts faced the challenge of navigating between the metaphorical dangers of Scylla and Charybdis, the mythical whirlpool and rock representing perilous choices.

Rather than merely imitating dominant fashions, many of these courts developed a unique 'third' language of court culture. This language blended native traditions and ancient expressions, standing alongside the established Habsburg and Valois/Bourbon norms in its own right.

This volume gathers insights from a 2012 conference in Denmark, organized by the PALATIUM project under the European Science Foundation. It features 23 case studies covering a wide range of regions including Denmark, Sweden, Poland, England, Russia, the Low Countries, Italy, and Portugal.
