Bildung is about achieving moral and emotional maturity, along with acquiring the education and understanding needed to flourish in your society. It means being deeply connected to your culture and community while maintaining the freedom to shape your own life path. The term "bildung" is German and doesn't have a direct English equivalent.

Starting in the 1770s, German philosophers saw bildung as a secular process of inner growth, which gained popularity among the middle class. In the 1830s, a Danish pastor recognized that peasants also needed bildung and imagined a new educational model: the folk-high-school.

By 1851, Danish teacher Christen Kold developed a teaching method where young farmhands learned to think independently. He used engaging stories to capture their attention and encouraged questions. This approach allowed him to introduce subjects like farming techniques, science, philosophy, history, religion, literature, art, economics, and political science.

The folk-high-school idea spread to Norway, Sweden, and Finland in the 1860s. By 1900, many young people in the Nordic countries had improved both their skills and critical thinking. This progress helped transform the Nordics from some of Europe's poorest nations into some of its wealthiest. Moreover, this shift and the bildung behind it enabled a peaceful transition from agricultural feudal societies to modern, democratic, industrialized countries.

Facing new challenges such as digitization, globalization, pandemics, and environmental changes, we now need a form of bildung suited for the 21st century. The book concludes by exploring what this modern bildung might look like.
