Beskrivelse

Coming Up for Air by George Orwell tells the story of a man longing to reclaim the innocence of his youth as the shadow of war approaches. George Bowling, a middle-aged insurance salesman, seeks to escape the monotony of his life and the fear of what the future holds.

A heartfelt reflection on nostalgia and the looming threat of war in pre-WWII Britain.

George Bowling is forty-five, married with children, and weighed down by the responsibilities of adulthood. With a mortgage, a growing waistline, and new false teeth, he feels trapped in a dull existence. As 1939 brings the looming threat of the Second World War, George is gripped by anxiety about the future-anticipating food shortages, soldiers in the streets, secret police, and oppression.

In a bid to find solace, he decides to revisit the village of his childhood, Lower Binfield, which he recalls as a peaceful rural retreat. However, his journey back to this simpler time may lead to a deeper sense of disappointment rather than comfort.

John Carey of the Sunday Times praises the novel as "very funny, as well as invigoratingly realistic," highlighting its importance as a precursor to Orwell’s later classics like Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Coming Up for Air is a richly readable work that carries the seeds of two literary masterpieces.
