Mary Shelley (1797–1851), daughter of the groundbreaking thinkers Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, eloped with poet Percy Shelley at sixteen. Three years later, during a rainy summer at Lake Geneva, she penned her legendary novel, Frankenstein. Her married life was marked by the loss of three of her four children, and further sorrow struck in 1822 when Percy Shelley drowned in Italy. After his death, Mary returned to England, continuing to travel and write until she passed away at fifty-three.
