Halicarnassian Studies V

Beskrivelse

Halicarnassian Studies V brings together a series of articles exploring diverse aspects of ancient Halikarnassos and its surrounding peninsula. This volume sheds light on archaeological discoveries and historical insights from the region.

A comprehensive exploration of ancient Halikarnassos through archaeological and historical studies.

This collection features detailed reports on various topics connected to the Halikarnassos area. One article covers the excavation of an Early Byzantine complex at Torba Monastery, located north of Halikarnassos. The site includes architectural remains such as a Mausoleum, a Basilica, a Bath, and a “Bishop’s House,” all richly adorned with mosaic floors and situated near a small harbor.

Another study introduces Bozdað, an ancient town and marble quarry near Myndos on the Halikarnassos Peninsula. This is the first description of a previously unknown marble quarry west of Halikarnassos, close to Myndos.

The volume also presents an extensive examination of tombs from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age across the Halikarnassos Peninsula. This research compiles rich material including tomb architecture, pottery, and other artifacts from a crucial period in the region's history.

Further, it discusses five Hellenistic Totenmahl reliefs found on the peninsula. These famous grave stelai raise questions about whether they originated from a local workshop or were imported from areas better known for such monuments.

Lastly, the book revisits the ancient Stadion of Halikarnassos, partially excavated twenty years ago during a brief investigation. Though the remains were quickly reburied, valuable information has been gathered from the initial findings and stone seats now housed in the Museum.
