Beskrivelse

Discover the rich history of the Zephyrion Peninsula in Halikarnassos through the findings of the Turkish-Danish investigations conducted between 1990 and 2024. This area, notable for the Castle of St. Peter, holds deep significance both in ancient and modern times.

An in-depth exploration of the Zephyrion Peninsula's archaeological and historical importance.

The Zephyrion Peninsula, crowned by the striking Castle of St. Peter, stands as the most prominent geographical feature of modern Bodrum. Historically, it was equally dominant in ancient Halikarnassos, serving as the city’s acropolis and housing key sites such as the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Palace of Maussollos.

This publication delves into ancient literary sources related to this remarkable location. It examines various ancient inscriptions and architectural fragments that were repurposed by crusaders in the castle walls. The study concludes that during the Early Classical period, around the time of Herodotos, the peninsula featured two or three elegant marble buildings designed in the Doric and Ionic styles.

Two excavations carried out between 1992-1993 and 2002-2004 uncovered substantial walls and foundations, which are likely remains of the Palace of Maussollos. Additionally, the pottery discovered during these digs offers a comprehensive chronological sequence, spanning from the Mycenaean period of the Bronze Age, through Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages, all the way to modern times.
