An in-depth look at Matisse's early masterpieces and their significance within his artistic journey.

Statens Museum for Kunst boasts one of the world’s most significant collections of Matisse’s work, including numerous paintings considered absolute masterpieces from his younger years. What makes this collection unique is that nearly all the paintings were personally chosen by Matisse to represent his art in important contexts.

Many of these pieces were showcased in early landmark exhibitions that helped cement Matisse's status as an innovative and remarkable artist. He sold most of these works to patrons and collectors, such as Sarah and Michael Stein, who supported his artistic endeavors during his formative years.

Within the museum, each painting interacts in complex and fascinating ways with other key contemporary works from Matisse’s diverse oeuvre. Over time, generations of Danish and international Matisse experts have worked to untangle the intricate connections between these works, building a rich body of knowledge and understanding.

Yet, despite extensive study, new perspectives continue to emerge, revealing additional layers of meaning in these paintings. This ongoing discovery inspired the museum to invite eight of the world’s leading Matisse scholars to focus their attention on one of the museum’s masterpieces, further enriching the dialogue around his art.
