Discover the first comprehensive catalogue showcasing all the Venetian drawings housed in the Royal Collection of Graphic Art at The National Gallery of Denmark. Many of these exquisite works have rarely been published or displayed to the public until now.

An extensive collection revealing the rich development of Venetian draughtsmanship from the 1480s to the late 18th century.

This catalogue highlights over 200 remarkable drawings by renowned artists such as Vittore Carpaccio, Moretto da Brescia, Domenico Campagnola, Jacopo Bassano, Paolo Farinati, and Paolo Veronese. It also features significant groups of studies by Palma Giovane and Antonio Vassilacchi, known as Aliense, alongside works by 18th-century masters including Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, Gaspare Diziani, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Domenico, Francesco Fontebasso, Francesco Guardi, and Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Research connected to this publication has uncovered not only a surprisingly large number of Venetian drawings but also their outstanding quality, with some of the most beautiful sheets in the collection originating from this region. The collection offers an exceptional and balanced overview of the evolution of drawing in Venice and its mainland from the 1480s-when sketching on paper became widespread-through the lesser-known 17th century, up to the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

Chris Fischer, the author, is a senior researcher and head of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Master Drawings at The National Gallery of Denmark. An internationally respected expert in master drawings, Fischer has curated exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Louvre in Paris and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. He is recognized as the leading scholar on the Italian Renaissance artist Fra Bartolommeo, who stands alongside Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo as one of the four most important figures of the High Renaissance.
