Beskrivelse

No Longer Human tells the moving tale of a young man struggling to find his place between the fading traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the influence of Western ideas. The story follows Oba Yozo, who sees himself as a failure despite living what appears to be a normal life.

A semi-autobiographical exploration of alienation and the search for identity in a changing world.

Oba Yozo, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, narrates his life with a sense of detachment, feeling unable to truly understand the people around him. From his early childhood through his high school years, where he adopts the role of a clown to hide his sense of isolation, to a tragic suicide attempt in adulthood, Yozo’s story is one of deep internal conflict.

The novel is unflinching in its portrayal of life's harsh realities and its rare moments of human kindness and connection, all told without sentimentality. As Dazai’s final completed work, it stands as a powerful reflection of his own experiences and struggles.

Born in 1909 into a wealthy landowning family in Northern Japan, Osamu Dazai was a brilliant student who entered the French Department of Tokyo University in 1930. However, he later admitted to never attending a lecture during the five years before leaving without a degree.

Dazai became known for confronting the social and moral upheavals of postwar Japan head-on. His life ended tragically when he took his own life by drowning in Tokyo’s Tamagawa Reservoir. No Longer Human is widely regarded as his masterpiece, capturing the voice of a complex writer described by Patti Smith as "an aristocratic tramp, a self-described delinquent, yet he wrote with the forbearance of a fasting scribe."
