Northern Worlds explores the outcomes of a cross-disciplinary research project at the National Museum of Denmark. It focuses on Denmark’s historical position as the far north, or ‘ultima Thule,’ and investigates human life in constantly changing environments.

An insightful look into human adaptation and cultural networks in the northern regions.

This book showcases the museum’s research efforts through various studies that examine agriculture, communication, and cultural connections. These investigations span from Denmark northwards to sub-Arctic Norway and extend into the North Atlantic reaching Arctic Greenland. The research highlights religious, social, and occupational conditions across these northern areas.

‘Northern Worlds’ emerges as a clear concept representing north-western Europe, with a strong focus on the Nordic region. It reveals how the once mysterious north, which sparked curiosity and drove Europeans on challenging journeys, is now understood through tangible evidence.
