Beskrivelse

Explore the complex identities and languages of Danish and German minority communities along the Danish-German borderlands. This book delves into how these groups navigate their cultural and linguistic landscapes.

An insightful study of hybrid minority identities shaped by regional, national, and transnational influences.

This work investigates the dynamic relationship between identity and language within the Danish minority and, to a lesser extent, the German minority in the Danish-German border region. It reveals that these minorities act as two interconnected and complementary groups alongside the national majorities. Although German is the dominant language in most areas of minority life, bilingualism and code-switching play a crucial role in defining group identity. The book also highlights that while regional and transnational identities have gained prominence over national ones among these minorities, their identity remains a blend rooted in the national cultures and languages of Denmark and Germany.

The minorities effectively "cherry-pick" social, economic, political, and linguistic resources from both nations, showcasing their unique position. Offering a fresh perspective on borderlands as vibrant living spaces, this study also introduces a theoretical framework for understanding hybrid and dual minority identities. It draws from nationalism studies, sociology, anthropology, and sociolinguistics to provide a comprehensive analysis.
