Spontaneous Acts

Beskrivelse

Spontaneous Acts is a captivating new novel by the acclaimed Yoko Tawada, exploring the life of Patrik, a literary researcher in post-lockdown Berlin. Struggling with isolation and identity, Patrik’s world shifts when he encounters a stranger who seems to know him well.

A dreamlike journey through friendship, literature, and the search for connection in a fragmented world.

Patrik lives in Berlin, a city slowly reviving after the lockdown, yet he finds himself confined to his home, barely able to get out of bed. Although the opera houses he loves have reopened, Patrik remains stuck in his own struggles. He is meant to present a paper in Paris on Paul Celan’s poetry collection Threadsuns, but even the simple question on the registration form, “What is your nationality?”, halts him.

As Patrik navigates a world that often feels overwhelming, he crosses paths with a mysterious man named Leo-Eric Fu, who surprisingly seems to know him already. Through this encounter, Yoko Tawada weaves a mesmerizing story that feels like a lucid dream, where the comforts of friendship, literature, conversation, and music are deeply explored and cherished.

Spontaneous Acts is a thoughtful reflection on the meaning we find in the words of those who came before us, and the ways we seek to be seen and understood.
