Beskrivelse
This book investigates why young men join violent groups and risk their lives, revealing how these organizations draw them in. It offers an in-depth look at radicalization through extensive ethnographic research across various conflict zones.
Exploring the complex and varied reasons behind youth involvement in violent organizations worldwide.
Through long-term fieldwork in diverse conflict areas, this volume delves into the violent groups that attract young people to participate in armed struggles and examines the responses of these youths to such calls.
The book takes readers inside the lives of Maoists in Nepal; ex-combatants, mercenaries, religious zealots, and drug dealers in West Africa; violent student movements in Bangladesh; ethno-nationalist vigilante groups in Kenya; factions involved in the conflict between the LRA and the Ugandan government; as well as gang-like fraternities in the Philippines.
By conducting in-depth, on-the-ground research, the author reveals that these mobilizations are often multiple, performative, and temporary. Young people involved may be sporadically radical rather than permanently bound by ideology.
