In 1912, Swiss explorer Alfred de Quervain and his team became the first to cross the central Greenland Ice Sheet by dog sledge, traveling from a glacier north of Jakobshavn/Ilulissat toward Ammassalik/Tasiilaq. Along the way, they discovered an unknown mountain range on the East Coast, which they named Schweizerland.

During their expedition, de Quervain and his colleagues observed a mountain range that was completely missing from existing maps, which only showed crevasses along the Ice Sheet’s edge. From over 100 km away, they sketched a panoramic view of the landscape and named 26 sites, although they couldn’t accurately place them on any map at the time.

This book not only recounts these initial discoveries but also compiles observations and data from later expeditions. Thanks to modern mapping techniques and the authors’ own visits, it has been possible to relocate and accurately plot Alfred de Quervain’s mountains on contemporary maps.

Moreover, the Greenlandic Place Name Committee, Nunat Aqqinik Aalajangiisartut, has officially approved most of the names given by de Quervain based on the authors’ research.
