During the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, the Arabian Gulf-known then as the Lower Sea, served as a crucial maritime corridor connecting major cities and states in Mesopotamia and Iran with Southeast Arabia and the Indus Valley. The thriving trade along this route required support stations, which in turn gave rise to flourishing civilizations that waxed and waned alongside the fortunes of commerce.

In the 1950s, Danish archaeological efforts along the Gulf’s southern shores uncovered remains of two ancient cultures: Dilmun and Makkan (Bibby 1969). From 1958 onwards, surveys and excavations in Kuwait revealed that the upper Gulf region was a significant part of the Dilmun civilization during the early 2nd millennium BC.

Throughout the periods before, during, and after Dilmun’s peak, Failaka Island-situated off the coast of mainland Kuwait-played a key role in several Near Eastern trade networks, with Mesopotamia acting as the dominant trading partner.
