The Pitted Ware Culture, originating from northeast Europe, spread to northeastern Denmark between 3000 and 2800 BC. The most significant archaeological evidence of this culture comes from the Djursland peninsula in eastern Jutland.

This book compiles research on the Pitted Ware Culture in Djursland, focusing on artefacts, faunal and botanical remains, and scientific analyses.

The volume features 12 detailed papers presenting findings from the key site of Kainsbakke, along with several other excavated and unexcavated locations. It covers not only artefacts but also offers an extensive study of faunal and botanical remains.

Several contributions focus on scientific analyses, including the chronology and origins of artefacts and selected animal remains. Based on these studies, the Pitted Ware Culture in Djursland is interpreted as a group that developed locally from the Funnel Beaker culture predecessors.

This community chose to set itself apart from its Funnel Beaker neighbors by adopting a distinct identity. This identity is seen as a blend of Pitted Ware characteristics in material culture and ritual practices, influenced by close interactions with Neolithic groups along Sweden's west coast, combined with elements from contemporary Funnel Beaker groups in other parts of Denmark.
