The Pyrenean Haute Route (HRP) is the toughest and most breathtaking trek across the Pyrenees, spanning 750km from Hendaye on the Atlantic coast to Banyuls-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean. This trail sticks close to the main ridge, crossing between France and Spain multiple times, and offers an unforgettable challenge for experienced hikers.

Among the three main coast-to-coast trekking routes in the Pyrenees, the HRP stands out as the most demanding and scenic. Unlike the GR10 and GR11, this path is unmarked and often ventures into mountaineering territory, following the ridge as closely as possible.

The route covers 750km, starting from the Atlantic resort of Hendaye and ending at Banyuls-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean. Along the way, it crosses the French-Spanish border numerous times, offering a diverse and spectacular landscape.

This trek requires solid experience, strong navigation skills, and self-sufficiency. However, the rewards are immense, with stunning views and varied terrain throughout. The guide breaks the journey into 44 day stages, grouped into five sections. Each section begins and ends at points accessible by public transport, allowing hikers to tackle them individually if they don’t have time for the full thru-hike.

While the route is perfect for wild camping, each stage concludes at a mountain hut or village, providing the option of a roof over your head every night. Detailed route descriptions are paired with 1:100,000 scale maps, including alternatives for bad weather and options to bypass the most technical parts.

Additionally, the guide offers optional ascents of 10 classic peaks, such as Vignemale, Pic du Taillon, and Pico de Aneto-the highest summit in the Pyrenees. It also contains useful tips on travel logistics, gear, and safety.

From the lush green foothills of the Basque Country to the high-altitude Pyrenean landscapes dotted with aquamarine lakes and towering 3000m peaks, the scenery is endlessly varied and beautiful. Highlights include the karst formations of Pic d'Anie, the Ossoue glacier, Lac de Mar in Val d'Aran, and the dramatic Cirque de Gavarnie with its impressive waterfall.
