According to the narrator, there are only three kinds of people left: Sleepers, ghosts, and spiders. Most fall into the category of Sleepers-people who go about their daily lives without truly understanding what’s happening around them.

The ghosts aren’t actual spirits but memories of those who existed before the world as we knew it came to an end. They don’t do much, simply existing as echoes of the past. The spiders, on the other hand, are very active, involved in all sorts of wild and unpredictable actions.

The story focuses on the differences between these three groups and what that means in this strange new world. The narrator, Ash Bourbon-a clearly fake name-shares his perspective. If you haven’t encountered him before, that might be for the best, as his past tales have painted him as somewhat of a maniac. He insists he’s not entirely that, though, and wants to explain his side of the story.
