Animal Farm is a sharp and unforgettable allegory about power and corruption, set against the backdrop of World War II. It tells the story of farm animals who overthrow their human owner, only to face a new form of tyranny under their pig leader.

Written during World War II, Animal Farm was George Orwell’s response to the complex political climate of the time. With the Soviet Union as Britain's ally against Nazi Germany, criticism of Stalin's harsh regime was suppressed or ignored. Many left-wing intellectuals even defended the Soviet Union, dismissing its brutal tactics as either exaggerated or necessary. However, Orwell saw Stalin as a "disgusting murderer" and felt compelled to expose this truth in a way that would reach a wide audience.

To achieve this, Orwell combined the traditional moral lessons of a beast fable with the satirical style of works like Gulliver’s Travels. The story follows a group of farm animals who revolt against their human owner, dreaming of a society where all animals share food, comfort, and freedom from slaughter. But when the pig Napoleon takes control, he betrays these ideals and establishes a dictatorship more oppressive than the one they replaced.

Initially, publishers were hesitant to release Animal Farm during the war, but it finally saw publication in August 1945. The book quickly became a key text during the early Cold War period-a term Orwell himself coined-and was often the target of attempts to alter its meaning. Today, Animal Farm endures as a timeless critique of tyranny and corruption.
