Beskrivelse
Discover the fascinating birdlife of Greenland, home to a wide variety of species including 58 that breed annually and around 50 more that regularly visit without breeding. This comprehensive guide captures all 269 species recorded in the region, including rare visitors and vagrants.
An in-depth look at Greenland's diverse bird species and their distribution.
This updated and annotated checklist offers a detailed account of every bird species observed in Greenland up to May 2026. It begins with a concise overview of Greenland’s history, politics, climate, and geography, setting the stage for an exploration of its unique ornithology.
The book features distribution maps for all regularly breeding birds, drawing on the author David Boertmann’s extensive observations alongside both published and unpublished data from Greenland, totaling over 13,000 records.
Since the last checklist published by Boertmann in 1994, three new species have successfully established breeding populations in Greenland. Additionally, vagrants have been spotted from distant regions such as the Pacific, Mongolia, Southeast Europe, and the subtropical United States. These new arrivals may be linked to the effects of climate change.
The taxonomy has been revised in line with international standards, resulting in some subspecies from the previous edition now being recognized as full species.
