Don Quixote

Beskrivelse

Don Quixote follows the adventures of a deluded gentleman who adopts the life of a knight-errant, famously battling windmills and sheep alike in honor of his beloved Dulcinea del Toboso. This timeless story has captivated readers for generations and influenced artists across various mediums.

A witty and profound exploration of human nature through the misadventures of a would-be knight and his loyal squire.

Cervantes’ masterpiece tells the story of a tall, lean knight and his short, stout squire, Sancho Panza, who have become iconic figures appearing in films, cartoons, and even video games. Originally meant as a parody of the popular chivalric romances of the time, this early novel evolved into a rich, humorous reflection on the contradictions within humanity.

Throughout his quest, Don Quixote encounters a wide array of characters from all walks of life. These include Maritornes, a prostitute praised for her Christian charity, and the Knight of the Green Coat, who represents some of the limitations of virtue. The narrative is infused with subtle irony that engages readers and invites them into the author’s thoughtful circle.

This edition features Peter Motteux’s acclaimed eighteenth-century translation, praised for capturing the spirit of the original Spanish text. It also includes an introduction and notes by Stephen Boyd from University College, Cork, enhancing the reading experience.
