In 1947, Bill Gaines took the helm of EC Comics, a company originally founded by his father, M. C. Gaines, who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern comic book landscape with creations like Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. Over the following eight years, Bill Gaines teamed up with notable figures such as Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood to revolutionize comics with unforgettable titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and MAD.
EC Comics became famous for their gruesome, dark horror and crime stories packed with sharp, ironic twists. They also broke new ground by producing authentic war comics, pioneering true sci-fi tales, and boldly addressing controversial topics of the time, including racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. Despite their success, the bold content eventually drew the ire of 1950s moral watchdogs who blamed such comics for juvenile delinquency. Following a thorough investigation into horror and crime comics, EC’s remarkable run came to an end.
