Beskrivelse
Helmut Newton's SUMO is a monumental photography book that defies the ordinary with its impressive size and stunning images. Celebrated for its groundbreaking concept and technical excellence, this 20th Anniversary Edition revisits the iconic project in a more accessible format.
A groundbreaking photography book that redefined scale and quality in publishing.
Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was known for challenging conventions, making the SUMO project a perfect fit for his bold vision. This book, as large as a private exhibition, showcases extraordinary photographs reproduced with cutting-edge printing techniques. Weighing nearly 80 pounds when boxed and shrink-wrapped, SUMO set a new standard for both artistic ambition and technical achievement.
Originally released in a limited edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, SUMO quickly sold out and became highly sought after. It is now part of prestigious collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The very first copy, signed by over 100 featured celebrities, made history by becoming the most expensive book of the 20th century when auctioned in Berlin in 2000 for 620,000 German marks (around 317,000 euros).
This XL edition commemorates 20 years of the SUMO legacy. Revised by Newton’s wife, June, it includes 394 images along with a booklet detailing the creation of this extraordinary publishing project. This edition serves as a heartfelt tribute to the larger-than-life figure of Helmut Newton, now presented in a more approachable size.
