Beskrivelse

A collection of personal reflections by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Meditations offers profound insights into Stoic philosophy. Originally intended for his own guidance, these writings have become a timeless source of wisdom.

An intimate glimpse into the spiritual and philosophical journey of a Roman emperor grappling with life’s challenges and the nature of existence.

Written in Greek by Marcus Aurelius, a thoughtful Roman emperor, Meditations was never meant for publication. This Penguin Classics edition features a translation by Martin Hammond, complete with notes and an introduction by Diskin Clay. The work presents a rich tapestry of spiritual reflections and exercises that Marcus developed while trying to understand himself and the world around him.

The Meditations explore a wide range of themes, from moments of doubt and despair to feelings of conviction and exaltation. Topics include virtue, human rationality, the nature of the gods, and the emperor’s own emotions. Though these writings were originally crafted as a source of personal comfort, they have grown into one of philosophy’s greatest achievements-offering practical and profound aphorisms that have inspired leaders, thinkers, and readers for nearly two millennia.

Martin Hammond’s translation captures the original’s intimacy and eloquence, supported by detailed notes that clarify the text. This edition also provides an introduction by Diskin Clay that delves into the Meditations’ background and evolution, along with a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and comprehensive indexes.

Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus (121–180) was adopted by Emperor Antoninus Pius and became emperor in 161, initially ruling jointly with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus. After 169, he ruled alone, spending much of his reign suppressing rebellions and persecuting Christians. His legacy is primarily defined by the Meditations, a series of Stoic reflections influenced by Epictetus that reveal his philosophical outlook on life. He was succeeded by his biological son, marking the end of the era of adoptive emperors.
