Beskrivelse

This book offers a personal glimpse into life in Morocco through the eyes of Poul Otto Jorgensen, who shares his experiences living in a mountain village with his Berber wife, Jamila. It explores the rich social fabric, geography, and family ties of the region near Agadir.

An intimate look at Moroccan culture, community, and the author's deep connections in the Berber mountain village of Hay Assersif.

Poul Otto Jorgensen spends much of his time in Morocco, where he lives with his Berber wife, Jamila, in the mountain village of Hay Assersif. This village lies close to the larger town of Aourir, about 20 km from Agadir.

During his stays, Jorgensen engages with locals, learning about the unique character of different areas in Morocco. Over cups of nana (mint) tea, he gains insights into the geography, demographics, occupations, governance, and complex family relationships of the region.

Family connections run deep in the Berber community where he lives. He often hears remarks like, "I know your wife well because my mother is her cousin," highlighting the close-knit nature of the people. On trips to Aourir, when Jamila greets someone, Jorgensen frequently discovers they are relatives, such as an aunt. While family members may speak harshly about one another, outsiders who intervene quickly learn to mind their own business.

Jorgensen expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared their knowledge and stories, acknowledging that their contributions made this book possible. Special thanks go to his beloved wife Jamila, as well as friends Soufiane, Hassan, his brother-in-law Mohamed, Ahmed, and Aaziz-whose last names he has chosen to omit out of respect for their privacy.

He also honors the memory of his late brother, Henning Jorgensen, whose reports and experiences in Morocco provided invaluable background. Henning’s travels and connections across different social levels enriched the author's understanding of the country.
