Beskrivelse

Discover the unique charm of Sikkim, a self-governing Himalayan principality, and explore the vibrant landscapes of Eastern India from Nepal to Visakhapatnam. This map captures both regions with detailed precision.

An insightful guide to the isolated beauty of Sikkim and the bustling eastern coast of India.

Sikkim, nestled in the Himalayas just north of India's Bengal State, is a mountainous principality with its capital at Gangtok. Most development is focused in the southern part of the country. Although it borders Nepal and Tibet, access to Sikkim is limited due to both physical and political factors, relying mainly on a single road from north of Darjeeling and a train line ending just inside the border. This isolation makes Sikkim a unique and captivating travel destination worth the journey.

The region is rich in religious heritage, featuring numerous Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh complexes. One of its standout features is the Nathu La road, one of the highest-elevation roads on earth, reaching 14,450 feet. This road lies along the ancient Gangtok-Lhasa trade route. While political constraints limit its use as a practical route to Tibet, the drive from Gangtok to Nathu La offers an invigorating experience, with an alternative return route through Kupup that provides an authentic travel adventure. Most temples are clustered around Gangtok, adding to the cultural richness.

Sikkim represents what might be called a ‘developing’ country, embracing a unique approach to happiness and offering a genuine travel adventure. The map’s second side presents a detailed view of Eastern India’s coast, stretching from Nepal and Sikkim in the north down to Visakhapatnam in the south, and westward to Varanasi/Benares. It also includes western Bangladesh, though the focus remains on Kolkata (Calcutta), the Grand Trunk highway leading west toward New Delhi, the expansive Ganges River system, and the temples of Orissa State.

Given India’s vastness, this map highlights major attractions like Shillong, Tawang, and Bodhgaya to help make the region easier to navigate. The scales are 1:135,000 for Sikkim and 1:1,400,000 for Eastern India, providing detailed and accessible insights into these fascinating areas.
