Beskrivelse
The Thorvaldsen Museum celebrates the legacy of Bertel Thorvaldsen, one of Europe's most famous sculptors. It houses his workshop contents and extensive art collections in his hometown, Copenhagen.
An architectural gem dedicated to public access and Thorvaldsen’s artistic heritage.
Named after Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), the museum showcases the life and work of this celebrated sculptor who spent over four decades creating in Rome. Upon his death, Thorvaldsen generously left his studio’s contents and vast art collections to Copenhagen, the city where he was born.
Opened in 1848, the museum embodies Enlightenment ideals by offering free public access to art and education, reflecting Thorvaldsen’s wish to gift his legacy to the Danish people rather than the monarchy. This gesture came during a time of political change in Europe, with Denmark abolishing absolute monarchy just a year later in 1849.
Located in a striking yellow ochre building at Copenhagen’s heart, the museum’s interior captivates visitors with its geometric patterned floors, earth-toned walls, and ceilings spanning 4,000 m² adorned with designs inspired by Antiquity and the Renaissance. The iconic portal motifs on both the exterior and interior walls draw from Egyptian, Etruscan, and Roman architecture.
At the museum’s core lies an open courtyard where Thorvaldsen is buried, offering a peaceful space reminiscent of Roman-Pompeian archaeological sites. This building was the first major project by architect M. G. Bindesbøll (1800–1856) and stands as his finest work. After four intense years studying classical architecture across southern Europe, Bindesbøll combined his knowledge with Thorvaldsen’s artistic vision to create a true Gesamtkunstwerk, blending form, color, space, and rhythm.
The Thorvaldsen Museum. An Architectural Masterpiece narrates the story behind this ambitious architectural endeavor, richly illustrated to highlight the museum’s unique design, colors, and decorative motifs.
