This book explores the strong tradition and professional role of midwifery in the Nordic countries, focusing on its theoretical foundations and practical applications. It offers a comprehensive look at Nordic midwifery within both local and international contexts.

Midwifery holds a significant place in the Nordic region, with a history spanning several centuries where midwives have carried the professional responsibility for normal childbirth. Despite this rich tradition, there is a need to further develop the theoretical framework that supports midwives and other professionals in the field.

This book aims to describe and discuss midwifery in the Nordic countries by situating it within its unique context as well as comparing it internationally. It is structured into three parts:

• Part 1 introduces midwifery within the Nordic setting.
• Part 2 covers essential theories, concepts, and perspectives such as evidence-based midwifery, childbearing views, salutogenesis, normal birth, the midwife-woman relationship, woman-centred care, family-centred care, continuity of care, place of birth, and support.
• Part 3 features eight chapters showcasing theories and concepts developed in the Nordic countries, including a chapter on continuity of care in Denmark, the only Nordic country practicing this care model.

The editors have selected these theories and perspectives because they are central to international midwifery and are actively used by Nordic researchers. This book is designed for midwifery students, PhD candidates, researchers, midwives, obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals interested in the field.
