Gerhard, recently heartbroken, embarks on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and back, a journey that not only changes him but also affects the people he meets along the way. His path strangely mirrors the journeys of his ancestors who traveled to and from Fulda.

Alongside Gerhard’s story, meet Esther, a Jewish pianist forced to flee Fulda during Kristallnacht, and Ranulf, a disgraced knight who sells his sword to protect a nun on a perilous mission to the Abbey in medieval Fulda.
