Beskrivelse

A cutting-edge hospital project uses AI to keep brain-dead patients alive for organ donation. But when a transplant goes wrong, a young medical data engineer begins to question what death really means.

Exploring the boundaries of life and death through advanced technology and medical ethics.

At a General Hospital, a special research initiative is underway to increase the availability of organs for transplantation. In the organ donation unit, brain-dead patients are sustained artificially with the help of sophisticated AI systems. This allows doctors to retrieve organs from deceased donors to save the lives of others in need.

The hospital uses a new definition of death called Data Death, determined by AI assessing brainstem death with precision. Erik, a young medical data engineer working in this Organ Bank, faces a challenging case when a young woman with a fatal brain injury is admitted.

Once the system confirms she is Data Dead, preparations begin to transplant her liver. However, when the procedure fails, Erik senses something beyond the usual medical explanations. He starts to wonder if there’s an unknown aspect of death that technology cannot measure.

Excerpt from the book:

Around the hospital bed holding the young woman with a severe skull fracture stood four people-two older individuals, likely her parents, and a young couple. The young woman was weeping. The patient’s brain was dying slowly, no longer able to sustain vital functions, which were now partly managed by Super Karl, the massive hospital computer. The prognosis predicted that brain death, or Data Death, would occur in about two hours and twenty minutes.

Erik’s worst fears came true when the young woman suddenly rose and shouted, “No, it cannot be true. You can’t take her organs, then she will die… it just isn’t right!”
