This detailed map covers southern England and Wales, showcasing key roads and many place names at a scale of 1:400,000. It’s designed to help visitors explore areas within a few hours’ drive from London’s airports.

Most travelers arriving in the UK land at one of London’s four airports and often combine a city visit with trips to nearby destinations. England’s rich heritage and diverse scenery make it challenging to capture the entire country on a single map. For this reason, England is divided into central/northern and southern sections.

This particular map uses a vertical layout to include a wide range of places-from Cornwall and Devon in the southwest up to the top of Wales, and from Wiltshire across to Kent and even up to York, which is technically not considered southern England but fits within this vertical frame.

At this 1:400,000 scale, the map shows southern England and Wales in good detail, featuring motorways, A roads, and most B roads. While many village roads are included, smaller C-level roads can be harder to spot due to the scale. The map also includes a greater number of place names than previous editions, though the finest details of village life will be reserved for future, more detailed maps at 1:250,000.

Considered a 'work in progress,' the map is detailed yet uncluttered, covering an area that can be driven in about four to five hours from Heathrow Airport. Thanks to road improvements over the years, visitors can now cover much more ground in the same time compared to decades ago.

Interestingly, the map also reveals how London’s surrounding greenbelt is gradually shrinking as the city continues to expand outward.
