Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is celebrated for his vibrant use of color and simple forms across various art forms. While best known for his paintings, he also explored drawing, sculpture, lithography, stained glass, and collage, eventually creating his distinctive cut-out technique later in life.

A master of bold color and fluid lines, Matisse’s work spans traditional subjects and innovative styles, culminating in his famous cut-outs.

Matisse often chose traditional themes such as nudes, portraits, figures in landscapes, Oriental scenes, and interior views. However, it was his daring use of vivid colors and flowing draftsmanship that established him as a leading figure of 20th-century art. His palette-featuring striking blues, rich purples, and bright yellows-freed his work from strict realism, aiming instead for what he called a "vital harmony." He frequently drew inspiration from music, seeing it as a parallel to his artistic expression.
