Explore the vital role rituals played in Late Iron-Age and Viking-Age Scandinavia, a time of major social and religious change. This book offers fresh insights into how rituals shaped the culture and mindset of the Viking Age.
Unpacking the significance of ritual performance in a transformative era.
Rituals were central to understanding the dynamic culture of Scandinavia during the Late Iron-Age and Viking Age, periods marked by significant social and religious shifts. Recent research brings exciting new perspectives on the social, political, and religious functions of rituals, highlighting their connections to symbolism, power dynamics, material culture, and human agency.
This collection presents the proceedings from the 39th Interdisciplinary Viking Symposium held at Aarhus University on 20th May 2022. Across five chapters, it explores key questions about what rituals were performed, how and why they took place, and who was involved, all within a largely pre-Christian context.
By examining the roles of people, language, objects, and spaces in ritual acts, this volume offers a richly interdisciplinary approach to deepening our understanding of ritual performance and its significance in the Viking Age.
