Rwanda and Burundi, once Belgian colonies, are nestled in a region often marked by unrest. Although both countries are currently relatively calm, nearby areas like Katanga and Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo remain volatile, especially impacting Rwanda.

The first section focuses on Rwanda, highlighting its capital, Kigali. The country's standout natural feature is Lake Kivu, where ferry services operate between Goma and Bukavu-though these crossings are not for the faint-hearted.

The second section centers on Burundi, featuring its capital, Bujumbura. Lake Tanganyika is Burundi’s main attraction, with a ferry route extending south to Nyanza and further into Tanzania. Border crossings exist to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west, which can be risky, and to Ngara in Tanzania.
