Pehr Forsskål’s Flora Aegyptiaco-Arabica, published in 1775, is a groundbreaking work that describes roughly 660 new plant species. Unfortunately, because it was edited after his death and contained errors, it created significant difficulties with plant nomenclature.
To pay tribute to Forsskål, subsequent botanists renamed many of the species he identified using eponyms based on his surname. However, scholars outside Scandinavia often had trouble spelling Forsskål’s name correctly.
This confusion led to a wide range of spelling variations in the scientific names derived from his surname, complicating the botanical record further.
