Tractatus Monacenses, Summa Ignoti And Summulae Antiquorum

This book offers the first complete edition of the Tractatus Monacenses, a collection of medieval logical treatises preserved alongside the Dialectica Monacensis. It sheds new light on the origins and development of medieval logic within a specific intellectual setting.

Exploring the origins and context of medieval logical treatises linked to Peter of Spain’s Tractatus.

The Dialectica Monacensis, edited by L. M. de Rijk in 1967, has long been central to understanding the progression of medieval logic. Yet, the Tractatus Monacenses, found in the same unique manuscript, has not received comparable attention until now.

This volume delivers the first full edition of the Tractatus Monacenses and reveals that, although the collection is not uniform, it was shaped within the same intellectual milieu as the Dialectica Monacensis. The evidence strongly suggests this environment was a German cathedral school around 1230, offering a compelling challenge to de Rijk’s earlier claim of an English origin dating to 1160–1170.

In addition, the book includes editions of three essential texts that play a key role in de Rijk’s study of the sources behind Peter of Spain’s famous Tractatus:

• Quaestiunculae super Summam Ignoti
• Fragments of Summa Ignoti found within the Quaestiunculae
• Summulae Antiquorum

With a thorough introduction, these editions provide a fresh foundation for rethinking the history of terministic logic and offer an alternative perspective to the traditional framework established by de Rijk’s research into Peter of Spain’s sources.
