Beskrivelse
This book explores how to quantitatively describe animal behavior by weighing the influence of both the individual and its environment. Using the three-spined stickleback fish as a case study, it introduces innovative statistical models to better understand behavioral motivation and interaction.
Quantitative insights into animal behavior through the study of sticklebacks and advanced statistical modeling.
The book focuses on developing descriptive models for hierarchically organized behavior, using the relatively straightforward behavioral patterns of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) as a testing ground. The findings, however, have broader implications that could extend to other species, including humans.
In collaboration with statistician Georg Rasch, psychologist Iven Reventlow was the first to quantitatively determine how much an observed behavior is influenced by individual factors such as sensitivity and motivation, versus environmental factors. Of particular psychobiological interest are Reventlow’s findings on the motivational systems controlling stickleback behavior. While ethologists traditionally recognize two primary systems-mating and territorial defense-Reventlow provides experimental evidence supporting a third, autonomous motivation system related to nest building, defense, and maintenance.
In addition to this, Reventlow introduces a novel mathematical two-parameter model describing how motivation evolves over time during ongoing activities in individual fish. This approach marks a departure from traditional ethological methods.
The book also includes a Commentary and Postscript by Professor Jens Mammen, which discuss challenges with the original model. They propose that a ‘waiting-time’ model of the Weibull type offers a better framework for calculating parameters and quantifying the interaction between individual and environment. This debate, which took place during the empirical research, highlights fundamental issues in the collaboration between mathematicians and scientists, which affected the research’s progress.
In the Postscript, possible reasons for these difficulties are examined using available sources, including biographical material. It also presents a straightforward method for applying the proposed Weibull model to both the original data and any new empirical material, aligning with general principles known from dimensional analysis in physics.
Despite the significance of Reventlow’s work, it has not received the international recognition it deserves, largely because it has never before been published in English.
