Sebastiao Salgado. Genesis. 45Th Ed

Beskrivelse

Sebastião Salgado’s GENESIS is a powerful photographic journey capturing the untouched beauty of our planet. This work reflects his lifelong connection to nature and humanity through striking black-and-white images.

A profound exploration of the Earth's pristine landscapes and the people and animals that inhabit them.

In GENESIS, Sebastião Salgado shares how his camera became a means for nature to communicate with him, a privilege he deeply values. His photographic journey began in 1970 when, at 26, he first picked up a camera and instantly found a new way to make sense of life.

Though it took years of dedication to become a professional photographer, Salgado consistently favored black-and-white photography, rarely shooting in color and eventually abandoning it altogether. Growing up on a Brazilian farm instilled in him a strong respect for nature and a sensitivity to humanity’s struggles amid harsh socio-economic realities.

Among Salgado’s renowned projects, three stand out for their depth and impact:

• Workers (1993), documenting the fading world of manual laborers across the globe.
• Migrations (2000), highlighting the mass movements of people caused by hunger, disasters, and environmental challenges.
• GENESIS, an ambitious eight-year expedition capturing the mountains, deserts, oceans, animals, and communities untouched by modern society.

Salgado reminds us that nearly half of the planet remains as it was at the dawn of time, and stresses the importance of protecting these areas. Through GENESIS and the Instituto Terra founded by the Salgados, the goal is to showcase Earth’s beauty, repair environmental damage, and safeguard it for generations to come.
