Sebastião Salgado’s GENESIS captures the untouched beauty of our planet through his powerful black-and-white photography. This monumental work reflects his lifelong connection to nature and humanity.
An epic visual journey exploring the pristine landscapes and peoples of Earth untouched by modern civilization.
In 1970, a 26-year-old Sebastião Salgado picked up a camera for the first time and instantly found a new way to understand life. Though it took years of dedication before he could support himself as a photographer, his camera soon became his means of engaging with the world. Salgado, known for his preference for black-and-white photography, rarely used color early in his career and eventually abandoned it altogether.
Growing up on a farm in Brazil, Salgado developed a profound respect for nature and a keen awareness of the harsh social and economic realities affecting people worldwide. Among his acclaimed body of work, three major projects stand out:
Salgado emphasizes that nearly half the planet remains as it was in the beginning, urging us to protect these precious areas. Through GENESIS and the Instituto Terra, he is committed to highlighting the planet’s beauty, healing past damage, and ensuring its preservation for future generations.
