Felix eagerly tore open a fresh deck of cards as he eyed Joe’s book with a skeptical expression. “What’s that you got there?” he asked.
“Found it on the bus,” Joe replied. “Thought it might be lucky. Maybe it would bring me some good fortune.”
“Hope it didn’t use up all your luck,” remarked a fourth student. Joe glanced over at him; the boy wore tinted glasses and had the build of a rugby player, sitting hunched over the small table.
The heavier student paused his eating to flip through the pages of the book. Though pretending to be interested, Joe knew he was actually checking to see if any aces were hidden inside.
Not yet, Joe thought to himself.
