Beskrivelse

Discover the insightful essays of Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), a renowned Scandinavian and Anglo-American literary figure. This study explores her reflections on three major twentieth-century issues: feminism, Nazism, and colonialism.

An in-depth look at Karen Blixen’s essays through the lens of a "creative dialectic" that shapes her views on critical social and political challenges.

This book offers the first critical examination of Karen Blixen’s most significant essays, which emerged from her lectures, radio broadcasts, and newspaper articles, later published as a unique genre within her body of work. Known for her aristocratic background, Blixen presented sharp, witty, and surprisingly progressive insights on feminism, the rise of National Socialism in Germany, and colonial race relations in British East Africa.

The study reveals that Blixen’s essays are driven by a "creative dialectic", a dynamic interplay of opposing ideas that she believed to be essential both to human existence and artistic expression. By employing a "dialectic method," she develops her arguments by engaging contrasting perspectives to reach fresh and original conclusions.

Building on extensive archival research, historical context, literary criticism, and bilingual analysis of Blixen’s celebrated works, this book also includes the first English translation of her 1938 essay, “Blacks and Whites in Africa”, translated by the acclaimed Tiina Nunnally.

Marianne Stecher, Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, is an Associate Professor of Danish and Scandinavian Literature at the University of Washington, Seattle. She has authored and edited several important works on Danish literature, including History Revisited: Fact and Fiction in Thorkild Hansen’s Documentary Works and collections on Danish writers across centuries.

“A highly illuminating study tracing the ‘creative dialectic’ in Karen Blixen’s essays on feminism, Nazism, and colonialism. This work highlights Blixen’s unique approach to these complex issues.”, Lasse Horne Kjældgaard, Danish Society of Language and Literature.
