Beskrivelse

A gripping biography of a young Danish man who emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s and faced the harsh realities of World War I. His journey from a poor childhood in Northern Denmark to the battlefields of Europe is both inspiring and tragic.

An intimate look at the life of a Danish emigrant who served in World War I and met a heartbreaking end on the battlefield.

The Destiny of an Emigrant Boy tells the story of a young man from Vendsyssel, Northern Denmark, who, like many others from his country, sought a new life in America during the early 20th century. The book follows his upbringing in a struggling community before detailing his transatlantic voyage to the United States. It then covers his conscription into the U.S. Army and his deployment back to Europe to fight in World War I.

His involvement in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive is described in detail, culminating in his tragic death during the war's final days. An excerpt from the book illustrates a poignant moment when, despite only a minor thigh wound, he was sent to a field hospital in Beaumont-en-Argonne. Captain McGeachin reassured him that his injury wasn’t severe and expected his swift return to duty.

About the author: Per Gyldendal Melberg was born on January 9, 1965, in Skærum, Vendsyssel, Denmark. He holds an M.Sc. in Economics and Commercial Law from the University of Aarhus and has spent the last 25 years living and working in Switzerland. His lifelong passion for history, especially concerning the two World Wars, shines through in this compelling biography.
