A captivating mystery blending magic, murder, and intrigue in Brighton's vibrant setting.

Magician Max Mephisto, recently divorced and living in London, is on his way to visit his daughter Ruby and her newborn when an old acquaintance, fellow performer Ted English-known as the Great Deceiver-reaches out. Ted’s assistant, Cherry, has been found dead in her Brighton boarding house, and Ted fears he will be blamed for her murder.

Max agrees to speak with Superintendent Edgar Stephens, who is leading the investigation. Meanwhile, Cherry’s family has enlisted private detectives Emma Holmes (Mrs Stephens) and Sam Collins to conduct their own inquiries.

The boarding house residents, many of whom are part of an Old Time Music Hall show on Brighton pier, form a peculiar group. The house is also linked to a shadowy radio personality named Pal. When a second magician’s assistant is murdered, Edgar begins to suspect a serial killer is at work.

To help catch the culprit, Edgar convinces Max to step out of semi-retirement and join the summer show. But the question arises-who can take on the role of his assistant? Edgar surprises everyone by suggesting someone very close to the team.
