While clearing out her late mother’s belongings in London, Ruth stumbles upon an unexpected photograph: an image of her Norfolk cottage dated before she ever lived there. Her mother had always despised the cottage, so why would she keep a picture of it? The only hint is a note on the back reading “Dawn, 1963.”

Determined to uncover the truth, Ruth heads back to Norfolk, only to find herself and her daughter confined to the cottage by the Covid lockdown. They juggle work and home-schooling, finding comfort in their new neighbor Zoe, a friendly woman renting the house next door. Their connection grows as they share moments like clapping for carers from their doorsteps.

Meanwhile, Nelson investigates a series of women’s deaths that might be suicides. His inquiry leads him to an archaeological find linked to the case. Breaking curfew, he visits the cottage and spots Ruth talking to Zoe-who he recognizes as a former carer once accused of killing her employer. But back then, her name wasn’t Zoe. It was Dawn.
