Set in a bleak near-future America, the story centers on sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty, who enters the annual Long Walk-a grueling test of stamina and mental strength. One hundred boys must maintain a pace of four miles per hour, continuously, day and night, without pause.
The prize for the winner is extraordinary: anything they desire for the rest of their life. But the rules are unforgiving. There is no finish line; the last person still walking is the champion.
Contestants are forbidden from receiving any outside help. Falling below the required speed results in a warning, and accumulating three warnings means immediate disqualification-ending their journey forever.
