The Politics Of Storytelling

Beskrivelse

The Politics of Storytelling delves into the powerful role storytelling plays in bridging private and public life. Michael Jackson builds on Hannah Arendt's ideas to reveal how stories shape our social and political worlds across cultures.

Exploring storytelling as a vital link between individual experiences and collective political realities.

Hannah Arendt viewed the political as a dynamic power relationship between private and public spheres, with storytelling acting as a crucial connector. In this updated edition, Michael Jackson expands on Arendt’s insights through a rich cross-cultural examination of storytelling.

The book draws on a diverse range of narratives, including Kuranko tales from Sierra Leone, Aboriginal stories of the stolen generation, testimonies from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and accounts from refugees, renegades, and war veterans.

Jackson investigates the often violent and unstable conditions under which stories are shared or suppressed. He highlights how storytelling allows people to symbolically reshape relationships between subjects and objects, restoring meaningful social connections.

By focusing on the interaction between self and other, self and state, and self and cosmos, the book shows how narrative can revive the foundations of social life. It concludes with a reflective discussion on how public discourse and private experience intersect through storytelling.
