Beskrivelse
Östen has purchased not only the Sami man's land and fishing rights but also his boat and well-kept fishing nets. Though he believes he's made a valuable deal, there's more to the land and water than he realizes.
A tale of ownership, tradition, and the unseen forces tied to the land in early 19th century Swedish Lapland.
Östen feels confident about his acquisition when he sees the fishing nets hanging on forked birch trunks by the lakeshore. Yet, despite the exchanges of land, forest, and water between people, these elements don't truly belong to anyone. Ancient claims by other beings linger beyond human ownership.
Tomas Månsson, the Sami man, may have boasted of great fishing fortunes in the lake, but his family has diminished over time. Östen remains unaware of these deeper truths, and perhaps that is fortunate. After all, those who believe they control their fate often work the hardest.
WILDERNESS is a settler story set in Saxnäs, located in Swedish South Lapland during the early 1800s. It is the fourth standalone story in the Modern Nordic Folk Tales series, crafted for adult readers.
