"Northland" follows Matti, who lives in Kärsämäki, a remote spot in North Ostrobothnia, Finland. This small town, known for its lone bus stop on the route between Oulu and Helsinki, serves as a brief stop for travelers heading to or from Lapland. The area is deeply rooted in Laestadianism, a conservative Christian movement established since the mid-1800s, and Matti was raised within one of its congregations.
Despite the strong traditions, the world around Matti is shifting, and so are the people within it-perhaps even Matti himself.
The story draws inspiration from the local culture of Kärsämäki, including its nature, history, folklore, and the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic.
