Beskrivelse
Afterlives tells the story of Ilyas, a boy taken from his family by German colonial troops, and Hamza, who was sold into war. Both return to a homeland deeply affected by colonial rule and conflict, seeking connection and survival.
A powerful exploration of colonialism, war, and the intertwined fates of individuals in early 20th-century East Africa.
As a child, Ilyas was snatched from his parents by German soldiers and forced to fight against his own people. Years later, he comes back to his village only to find his parents gone and his sister Afiya given away. At the same time, Hamza returns-unlike Ilyas, he was sold into war and has grown up as the trusted aide to an officer, a role that has left a lasting mark on him.
With nothing but the clothes he wears, Hamza searches for work, safety, and the love of the beautiful Afiya. Meanwhile, the early 20th century sees European powers-Germans, British, French, Belgians, and others-carving up Africa, stamping out uprisings to maintain control.
The conflict in Europe spills into East Africa, bringing brutal warfare that ravages the land. Against this backdrop, the lives of Ilyas, Hamza, and Afiya become entwined through love, work, and survival. Yet as they navigate these turbulent times, the looming shadow of a new war on another continent threatens to drag them into its grasp once again.
