When RCA Victor asked Alfred Wertheimer to photograph a relatively unknown singer from Memphis, he had no idea it would become the defining assignment of his career. At only 21 years old, Elvis Presley was on the verge of superstardom, and Wertheimer was there to capture it all.

Acting like a fly on the wall, Wertheimer snapped nearly 3,000 images throughout that pivotal year, offering an intimate and comprehensive look at a young man about to make history. His work provides a rare glimpse into Elvis’s world at a moment of transformation.
